The TransXML project team has adopted the crash records schema developed by NHTSA as part of Global Justice XML.  In doing so, we give endorsement and support to this effort, and commit the TransXML project to supporting and enhancing NHTSA’s work in this area through the compilation and submission of comments and suggestions from the transportation safety community.

This decision is motivated by several factors: 

• The substantial overlap between the NHTSA schema and the TransXML crash records UML model (both were based on the Model Minimum Uniform Crash Criteria, or MMUCC);
• The fact that the NHTSA schema is complete and has been endorsed by both Global Justice and the Federal Highway Administration;
• The commitment of NHTSA to serve as a steward of this schema, serving as the gatekeeper for all future revisions.

The TransXML project continues to plan for sample applications which showcase the use and potential benefits of the Crash Records schema.  We expect that these activities will continue with the cooperation and as-needed assistance of NHTSA, its staff, and contractors.

This decision has been made with the concurrence of the NCHRP 20-64 Project Panel, and means that the TransXML project team will cease efforts to create a separate crash records schema.   Our work on the Highway Safety Information schema will continue.
